Reference matching guide
How to match a film reference photo
Matching a film reference photo works best when you separate the reference into palette, contrast, density, and texture decisions rather than copying everything at once. Kalar's reference workflow helps you establish direction, then refine the look manually until it fits your own image.

1. Pick a reference for the right reason
Choose a reference because of its palette, contrast, density, or highlight behavior. Avoid references that are only attractive because of subject matter or composition.
2. Normalize the target image first
Set white balance and exposure so the target image is technically stable before you ask it to resemble the reference.
3. Match broad relationships before effects
Work from overall palette and tonal structure into more specific hue shifts. Add grain, halation, or bloom only after the core color relationships feel right.
4. Respect the source differences
Different cameras, lenses, lighting, and subjects mean the goal is visual intent, not pixel identity. Use the reference as direction, then refine by eye.
